Goals and Challenges

Nick, an avid DIY gardener, derived great pleasure (and exercise) from installing his own hardscape elements and plantings. The client had already completed a deck installation and had plans for new hardscape features, but recognized that professional design help was needed. He approached CNLD for a complete design. The goal was to create a pleasing outdoor living space meeting an extensive list of desired family’s needs, while providing a professional result that would enhance property value.  At the heart of the challenge was to artfully integrate numerous new hardscape elements including a fountain, hot tub, patio, grilling area and walkway while bringing unity with the existing deck and house.

The initial meeting was to understand how and when the family planned to use the new outdoor space and the interrelationship of the spaces. Nick also explained the approach he wanted to use for executing the installation including timing. CNLD designed the entire back yard in the scope, incorporating hardscape and plantings together with lawn elements and perimeter screening beds in order to produce integrated coherent spaces. The CNLD multi-step process approach resulted in a detailed area plan that the client could execute.

Before – Open Lawn

The hardscape design features a paver walk and a unique patio area that weaves the functional elements of deck, hot-tub, fountain and grilling area together. The living space is made more inviting by the use of planting beds that include vertical spatial elements for interest and screening, and the patio design enables movement between multiple sitting and use areas for intimacy. The surrounding lawn and property border screening beds have flowing curves integrated with the hardscape shapes to create a harmonious flow throughout the entire backyard and encourage movement through the entire yard.

The client contracted with a professional installer to prepare the base for the walkway and patio. The remainder of the work was done by the client. CNLD documentation helped the client to successfully install this extensive professional landscape on his own.  Accurate and readable layout drawings and detailed plant lists provided the needed information for efficient procurement and correct layout of both the paver areas and the plantings.
