Goals and Challenges

Burt and Laura’s dogs were wearing persistent bare lawn paths and trampling decade old shrubs from the original CNLD master plan. The backyard lawn included a significant slope leading down from the deck and walk. The goal was to find a solution that would stop the erosion and destruction. As the project evolved this goal was eventually expanded to include improving access to and from the backyard.

Approach

The project started as a consultation for ideas to resolve the dog related issues. As a result, the client selected a low cost solution of a turf reinforcing grid and low fencing. Unfortunately this solution turned out to not completely resolve the erosion and trampling issues.  The clients wanted to pursue a more permanent and robust solution.  After further discussions, the clients agreed that even more benefit could be derived from a hardscape design that would also improve accessibility of the sloping yard. A series of design and review meetings resulted in an agreed upon approach and the completion of a detailed design plan that was approved by the clients.

Design

The worn dog path has been successfully eliminated using a long curving walk, which the dogs naturally follow, and also provides dry and safe passage for people from gate to rear door. The highlight of the design is a generous set of steps that provide a direct and gracious route for people from the adjacent deck and between the front and back yard. Graceful wing walls incorporated with the steps add beauty and function to protect the existing and new plantings. A unique feature of the design is a wrap-around ramp that produces a raised planting bed, which is valued by the avid gardener client as additional garden space. The gently sloped ramp provides an easy non-step access when desired for both pets and people and adds functionality for the client for such tasks as transporting materials with a wheelbarrow.

Execution

Installation of walkway and walls was contracted by the client with a hardscape installer who used the detailed plan drawings to quote the project and secure appropriate materials. On-site layout and supervision consultation by CNLD ensured a high quality result. The clients completed the bed preparation and plantings using the integrated planting plan.
